noon–1 pm CST
Nengi Omuku will be giving a talk today with Nichole Bridges, the Morton D. May Curator of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas and Bukky Gbadegesin, associate professor of art history at Saint Louis University, and independent curator Anthony Agbapuonwu to discuss the exhibition ‘Aso Oke: Prestige Cloth from Nigeria’, as well as the ways in which Omuku incorporates textiles into her work. The conversation will explore personal connection and knowledge of the three fundamental types of aso oke textiles created by Yoruba weavers in southwestern Nigeria for celebratory and ceremonial occasions from the early 19th to late 20th century.
Omuku’s ‘Mar Loj’, 2023 is on view in ‘Aso Oke: Prestige Cloth from Nigeria’ at the Saint Louis Art Museum until 10 March 2024.
