Hussein Chalayan: Rise

2 May - 1 June 2013 The Box

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is very excited to be presenting a special commission in The Box by one of the world’s most highly respected and innovative fashion designers and artists, Hussein Chalayan. Chalayan works across the disciplines of art and fashion interchangeably, with an interest in the performative body and in the construction of cultural identity. Here, he presents Rise, a rotating flick book featuring his new AW13 collection. These moving images tap into the spirit of Chalayan’s transformer dresses, which themselves are unravelled in an analogue yet filmic manner. Here, we witness Chalayan’s collection in a dynamic and perpetual state of evolution.

Rise, 2013, has been made especially for The Box, a micro project space consisting of a floating white cube set inside a black vertical opening. The Box is a unique architectural space through which the gallery facilitates new projects with important emerging and established artists. Other commissions include Ai Weiwei, Martha Rosler, Daniel Arsham, Olaf Breuning, Trenton Doyle Hancock and David Batchelor.

Chalayan was awarded British Designer of the Year in 1999 and 2000, and represented Turkey at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005. His recent solo exhibitions include those at Les Arts Decoratifs, Paris; Design Museum, London; Lisson Gallery, London; Galerist, Istanbul; Istanbul Modern; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. He has also exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Museum Bellerive, Zürich; Kunstmuseum, Wolfsburg; and the Royal Academy of Arts, London. Chalayan will show his AW13 Collection at the Audi Fashion Festival, Singapore in May and he will present a new project, The Frozen Monologue, at Glasstress: White Light / White Heat, an exhibition curated by James Putnam and Adriano Berengo for the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013.
