Shana Moulton: This organ wants this, that organ wants that

12 June - 21 August 2015 The Box

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to present a new installation especially for The Box by US artist Shana Moulton. In her performance, video and installation work, Moulton combines a wry humour with a kitsch sensibility to explore the relationship between American consumer culture and New Age spirituality. She initiates relationships with objects and consumer products that are at once banal and uncanny, often involving her fictional alter-ego, Cynthia.

For The Box, Moulton has created a site-specific assemblage which continues her ongoing exploration into beauty products, feminine anxiety and self-improvement. In the gallery’s viewing room, Moulton’s most recent film MindPlace ThoughtStream (2014) is on show, tracking Cynthia’s pursuit of wellbeing through stress-relieving health products.

Shana Moulton is currently subject of a major solo exhibition at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco and, in March 2015, she presented a series of recent projects at MoMA, New York.

She has performed at the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (2014); Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh (2013); Performa 13, New York (2013); Western Front, Vancouver (2013); San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (2012); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2012); New Museum, New York (2011); Kitchen, New York (2010) and Exit Art, New York (2010).

Most recently, Moulton has had solo exhibitions at Project Space 1646, the Hague (2014); Braverman Gallery, Tel Aviv (2014); Nieuwe Vide, Haarlem (2014); La Mama Galleria, New York (2014); Gimpel Fils, London (2014); Smack Mellon, Brooklyn (2013); Fondazione Morra Greco, Naples (2013) and Galerie Crevecoeur, Paris (2013). Recently, she has participated in group exhibitions at Cricoteka, Kraków, Poland (2014); Abbaye St André Centre d’art contemporain Meymac, France (2014); the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2014); Galerie Crèvecœur, Paris (2014); Art Exchange, Colchester (2014); BALTIC 39, Newcastle (2014) and Monkey Town 4, Denver (2014).
