Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, NC, acquires work by Wangari Mathenge

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to announce that Wangari Mathenge's The Ascendants XIV (She Is Here), 2021, has been acquired by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, North Carolina.

The painting was part of Mathenge's recent solo exhibition You Are Here at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London in 2021. The piece belongs to the artist's ongoing series, The Ascendants, which explores relocation and acculturation in relation to diasporic communities. A very personal series, these works examine what it means to live within traditional African culture and the legacy of colonialism, and how these histories interact in the present.

Wangari Mathenge (b. Nairobi, Kenya 1973) holds an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, IL (2021). Recent institutional exhibitions include Stretching the Body at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, and Black American Portraits, at LACMA, Los Angeles. Further collections include Weisman Art Museum, Minneapolis and Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin.
