Nasher Museum of Art acquires work by Ming Smith

Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, NC, acquires 1970's work by Ming Smith

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to announce that Ming Smith's, Untitled (Self Portrait with Camera), New York City, NY, 1975, has been acquired by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, North Carolina. Smith often uses her own image within her works, nearly always depicted holding a camera, asserting her identity both as an artist and a black woman. This piece encapsulates Smith's own reflections on her career: “It was just me and my camera. I worked to capture black culture, the richness, the love.”

Smith's solo exhibition A Dream Deferred opens at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery on 18 March 2022. The exhibition of rare, vintage prints and hand-painted photographs, will mark her inaugural physical exhibition with the gallery, and first solo show in London. Forthcoming exhibitions include Just Above Midtown: 1974 to the Present at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and a major survey, Ming Smith: Feeling the Future, at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
