Opening tomorrow, KV Duong will be included in Never The Same River at The Ford Foundation Gallery, New York, NY. The exhibition runs until 5 December 2026 and is curated by Dexter Wimberly.
Never The Same River explores themes of bodily autonomy and human migration. The exhibition’s title draws on the famous remark attributed to ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus that “No man ever steps in the same river twice.” At its core, the show considers how individuals assert agency over their own bodies in the face of cultural and systemic forces that seek to control or define them.
Duong will be presenting Family Portrait (2026), an unseen 5 panel work made on the occasion of the exhibition. In Family Portrait (2026) the artist fragments, multiplies, prints, and paints images of his extended family from 1986, their final year together in Vietnam. Throughout his practice, Duong considers notions of home and the complications of belonging to a certain place when living in a diaspora. The blurred multiplicity of the family's faces, as well as the anonymity of their negative space silhouettes, alludes to the flawed universal portrayal of the ESEA (East and South East Asia) community within Western culture.
