Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to announce that Shaqúelle Whyte's first institutional solo exhibition, Shattered Dreams, will be presented at Wolverhampton Art Gallery, following the acquisition of his painting, Blackbirds singing in the dead of night (2025), by the museum. The exhibition will open on 18 April and be on view until 30 August 2026.
Shattered Dreams brings together a group of paintings made by Whyte between 2023-2026, each shown for the first time in the artist's hometown of Wolverhampton. Whyte's connection to the city is deeply personal and formative and visits to Wolverhampton Art Gallery during his youth played a pivotal role in nurturing his creativity. Speaking on the upcoming show, Whyte said "I’m Blakenhall born and bred, and it’s an honour and a privilege to bring my work back to the city. I hope that in a small way I am able to fly the flag for what the Black Country represents wherever my journey may take me."
Since graduating with an MA painting from the Royal College of Art in 2023, Whyte has had solo exhibitions at Pippy Houldsworth Gallery, London (2024; 2025) and White Cube, Hong Kong (2026). Recent group exhibitions include Everything Now All At Once, Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, NC (2026) and Roots in the Sky, HOME Manchester, curated by Tunji Adeniyi-Jones (2025-2026). In 2024 Tate Britain presented a live conversation between the artist and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe. Other public collections include The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Arts Council Collection; The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent, made possible with the support of The Contemporary Art Society; and Nasher Museum of Art, Durham, NC.
