Sophia Loeb in Aberto 04, Paris

Sophia Loeb's Peregrinos a você (2024) is included in Aberto 04, taking place this year at Maison La Roche, Paris,  a building designed by the visionary architect Le Corbusier. Aberto is an annual exhibition series pairing contemporary painting with iconic modernist design and architecture. In 2024, Loeb participated in Aberto 03 at the Tomie Ohtake Residence in São Paulo, Brazil.

In Sophia Loeb’s Peregrinos a você (2024), the artist works in dense layers of oil and acrylic paint, with final velveteen applications of loose pigment to emulate the rhythms and ripples of the natural world. Translated from her native Portuguese, Loeb’s title reads as Pilgrims to you, an abstract rendering of the journeys or pilgrimages taken by plant species and organisms as they are lifted up and carried in the air, drifting to their final destination. In radial bursts of orange and blue brushwork Loeb references natural processes such as pollination, offering distinct moments that guide the viewer through her eddying composition. Loeb’s practice is driven by instinct and informed by meditation, allowing for chance encounters in colour and form as her process unfolds.

Sophia Loeb (b. 1997, São Paulo, Brazil) lives and works in London. She received her MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, London, and earned her BA in Fine Art and History of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London.
