Caroline Achaintre: Stoner

8 June - 1 September 2017 The Box

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is pleased to present a new ceramic work in The Box by London-based artist Caroline Achaintre.

Stoner (2017) manifests Achaintre’s ongoing interest in capturing the ‘middle-ground’ or 'the-in-between’. Drawing upon the tradition of tribal masks, the artist uses a simple, visual register to conjure up the crude impression of a face fluctuating between figuration and abstraction. By retaining the malleability of the clay in its unfired form, Achaintre emphasises this process of metamorphosis, with the title of the work alluding to a lucid, drug-induced state of being.

Caroline Achaintre is a French artist (b.1969) living and working in London. Recent solo exhibitions include those at FRAC Champagne-Ardenne, Reims (2017); BALTIC, Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2016); Tate Britain, London (2015) and Castello di Rivoli, Turin (2014). Recent group exhibitions include those at Turner Contemporary, Margate (2017); Camden Arts Centre, London (2016); Musée d’Art moderne de la ville de Paris, Paris (2013) and The New Art Gallery Walsall (2013). Achaintre was recently part of the Hayward Touring exhibition British Art Show 8 and is currently part of a group show at Kunsthalle Basel. She is on the selection committee for this year’s edition of Bloomberg New Contemporaries.
