Signs for the Future: splenser teset kaliv ir,

20 January - 18 February 2012

Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to present its second commission for The Box by artist Alasdair Duncan. The Box, specially designed by Simon Dance Design, is a miniature project space consisting of a removable floating white cube set inside a black vertical opening. It is a unique architectural space through which the gallery facilitates projects with important emerging and established artists. Invited artists are commissioned to make an artwork specifically for The Box.

Alasdair Duncan has produced a new video piece as part of his series Signs for The Future. His signs are stand-ins, or graphic emblems of that which is not yet imagined. Here, Duncan presents a new moving sign at the end of The Box’s black corridor.

Signs for the Future: splenser teset kaliv ir animates simple shapes in a limited yet vivid colour palette. Floating in and out of each other, hovering between two and three dimensions, these shapes recall the lexicons of our designed world – political, social and technological. Appearing at once like Russian futurist symbols, indeterminate yet full of promise, they seem also to sink into their own representational space, or logical game.

Recent solo exhibitions include Theodore: Art, New York; MOCA, London; and RBS Gallery, London. Group exhibitions include Aubin Gallery, London; Take Out Drawing, Seoul, South Korea; Rokeby Gallery, London; Treignac Project, Treignac, France; ICA, London; and Basement Art Project at Yinka Shonibare’s space, London.

Opening Hours: Mon-Fri 10-6, Sat 10-4. For further information, please contact Claire Nichols on +44 (0)20 7734 7760 or
