The art gallery is not an idealised space set apart from the real world. It cannot function in Isolation from what exists beyond its walls. These walls are pierced and its space is plumbed and plugged into all that surrounds it. What comes in resonates, reverberates and bleeds out again. Reverberator involves the work of four contemporary artists together with that of the maverick 1970s figure Andre Cadere in an intriguing exploration of this process of exchange. Each piece in the show reveals a multifaceted understanding of space: a complex interplay between the work itself, the meaning conferred by the gallery context and that found in the world outside.

Franz Ackermann will show new Mental Maps, the ongoing series of small works which he makes whilst travelling. The maps record his perceptions of the structures and patterns of the places he visits.

Andre Cadere carried his multicoloured Barres de Bois Rond (Round Bars of Wood) on planned city walks before presenting them to friends and colleagues, or placing them in galleries alongside the works of other artists. These displacements challenged both the sanctity of the gallery space and the self-contained authority of the neighbouring art.

Luisa Lambri's quiet photographs emphasise the individuality of her response to architectural interiors and her preoccupation with the relationship between building and occupant.

Through the laborious accumulation of biro marks on paper Paul McDevitt constructs images of the stars and nebulae of an imaginary cosmos. Against the vastness of his fictional universes, McDevitt's laborious efforts echo our puny attempts to deal with existence.

Matthew Ritchie's exuberant, multi-part works wrestle with the problem of how any system of representation can only be an interpretation of our circumstances from the standpoint of the present moment. They are not confirmations of an existing reality, but incessant reconfigurations of where and who we are.

Reverberator is curated by Michael Archer who writes for Artforum, Art Monthly and Untitled. The second edition of his book Art since 1960, was recently published by Thames and Hudson. He co-curated Material Culture at the Hayward Gallery, London and Voice Over, a South Bank Touring Show and is a member of the jury for the 2002 Turner Prize.
