Houldsworth Fine Art is pleased to present new work by Scottish painter, Robert Wilson. Bright, bold paintings, they originate in Wilson's interest in the marketing of food, both within and outside of the supermarket..
From raw vegetables to ready meals, countless images of food stimulate taste buds and encourage selection. The basic banality of food and the paradox of its promotion intrigue Wilson. Food is marketed to be appealing, appetising, sustaining and occasionally refined, its continuous consumption is an attractive prospect. The high energy colours and the slickness of Wilson's canvases underline the ubiquity of contemporary advertising and its incessant promotion of consumption.
Wilson's paintings are contemporary still lifes, articulating a Pop sensibility that is drawn to the most everyday of meals. He makes them objects of a renewed contemplation and wonders at the vanishing gap between the real and the represented. It is perishable food, but preserved forever in oil on the canvas.
Robert Wilson graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1989. He has had solo exhibitions at the Tram Depot and the Collective Gallery in Scotland; this is his first solo exhibition in London. His work is in numerous collections, including that of the Saatchi Gallery.
